“Although Artificial Intelligence might seem to be something new, the idea of machines capable of thinking or endowed with some human capabilities has captivated our interest since ancient times”, says Nuria Oliver, Director of Research in Data Science at Vodafone in her speech at the Spanish Royal Academy of Engineering. She draws the history of AI and new technologies through the past three centuries and explains how AI can help humanity to move towards a better future.
The contribution describes the different types of AI systems and gives a summary of how the technologies of today evolved throughout the process from the first until the fourth industrial revolution. She also sheds light on the always addressed question of how humans and AI systems can coexist and whether or not AI will be able to dominate humanity one day.
Next, Nuria Oliver describes the labour and economic impact that AI already has and furthermore will have on our lives. Apart from economic growth, the impact of AI will also not be exempt from profound social changes that Dr Oliver presents in her speech.
Finally, Nuria Oliver emphasizes the need of principles for the development of a humanity-centered Artificial Intelligence, grouped in 5 dimensions such as Fairness, Autonomy and Accountability and Transparency.
